SYMPTOMS
Attempting to set a security descriptor for a communications ports results in error code 1350 (ERROR_NO_SECURITY_ON_OBJECT) being returned to the program that attempted to set the descriptor.
CAUSE
Windows 2000 includes a new device for Plug and Play support in the device stack for the serial device. This device is controlled by the Serenum.sys driver. This driver creates an unnamed device entry that is installed above the serial driver. Because this device does not have a name, Windows does not assign a security descriptor to it.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
