MORE INFORMATION

The Remote Update option in Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition works by sending out a general network broadcast looking for a Windows 2000-based server to answer. If a Windows 2000-based server acknowledges the broadcast, it responds by sending out a configuration template file. This template can override your network configuration, including your TCP/IP settings, even if you are using a static address. This template can also override other system settings in your registry.
