  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

This article was previously published under Q258010

SYMPTOMS

When you are running Windows 98 Second Edition on a computer that supports the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) specification, if you insert a CardBus card, the following symptoms may occur:

  • The mouse pointer may alternate rapidly and continuously between a "normal" pointer and a "busy" (hourglass) pointer.
  • The system may perform very sluggishly.
  • The CardBus card never finishes being initialized.

CAUSE

On an ACPI-enabled computer that uses certain Texas Instruments CardBus controllers, inserting a CardBus card that does not support power management can result in a continuously asserted Power Management Event (PME) signal by the controller. This causes the card to be continuously re-enumerated.

The CardBus controller chipsets known to be affected by this issue include:

  • Texas Instruments PCI 1450
  • Texas Instruments PCI 1451

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

NOTE: One side-effect of this fix is that Wake-On-LAN or Wake-On-Ring functionality may be disabled for a CardBus or PCCard network card or modem that you inserted into the CardBus slot.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
