SUMMARY

Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition, includes a utility named Doskbd that modifies a program's keyboard polling to improve system performance when you are running MS-DOS-based programs.

There is no such utility for Windows 2000, and the Windows NT 4.0 version does not work in Windows 2000. The current solution for solving problems that normally would necessitate using Doskbd is to use Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. MORE INFORMATION

Doskbd works by monitoring how frequently the MS-DOS-based program checks the keyboard buffer for input. If it checks too frequently during a specific interval (by default, a single system timer tick), the program is suspended, or put to sleep, for a short period of time. This improves performance in Terminal Server by keeping MS-DOS-based programs from consuming too much of the CPU resources.
