SUMMARY
The purpose of this article is to describe the process of creating and implementing multiple public folder trees. Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server allows administrators the flexibility of creating multiple public folder trees (also known as "top-level hierarchies").
With multiple public folder trees, administrators can separate internal public folder hierarchies from hierarchies that have external users accessing them, thus keeping external users from physically accessing internal public folders. They can also be used to separate groups or departments within an organization.
When Exchange 2000 is installed, a default public folder tree is created and is accessible from all MAPI and Internet clients (such as HTTP, IMAP, and NNTP). Subsequent public folder trees are only accessible from HTTP and NNTP clients.

To create an additional public folder tree:
- Start the Exchange System Manager.
- Expand the Administrative Group that you want to add the new public folder tree to.
- Right-click the Folders container, click New, and then click Public Folder Tree. The Properties page for the new public folder tree appears.
- Type a name for the new public folder tree. The Details tab shows the creation and modification dates, and allows you to enter administrative notes.
To add a public store to a public folder tree:
- Within the same Administrative Group that the you created the new folder tree, expand the Servers container.
- Expand the container of the server where you are going to add the new public store.
- Right-click the Storage Group where you want to create the new public store, click New, and then click Public Store. The Properties page for the new store appears.
- Type a name for the new public store.
- Next to the Associated Public Folder Tree section, click Browse, and then click the public folder tree to which you want to apply this public store. Click OK.
- Configure the remaining parameters for your new store, and then click OK to save the properties.
After you click OK to save the properties, you receive a dialog box that asks you whether you want to mount the new store or not. If you click Yes, the store attempts to mount, and you will be notified if it was successful.
To verify what Public Store is associated with a Public Folder Tree, under the Folders container, right-click the Public Folder Tree, and then click Properties. On the General tab, you see which public stores are associated with this public folder tree.
