MXL5: Excel 5 for the Macintosh and Mac OS 9 Are Incompatible

ID: Q257546

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a, used with:
    • Mac OS 9

SYMPTOMS

You encounter one or more of the following problems with Microsoft Excel 5.0:

  • You receive the following error message when you attempt to start Excel:

    Not enough memory

NOTE: No buttons may appear in the error message dialog box, but if you press RETURN, the error disappears.

  • Nothing happens when you click Open, Save, or Save As on the File menu.

  • Excel does not display the worksheet tabs.

CAUSE

These problems occur if you have installed Mac OS 9 on your computer. Mac OS 9 and Excel 5.0 are not compatible.

RESOLUTION

Mac OS 9 and Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition are fully compatible. Therefore, for the optimal computing experience, Microsoft recommends that you upgrade to Excel 98 if you plan to upgrade to Mac OS 9.

If you want to continue running Excel 5.0, you should not upgrade to Mac OS 9. If you have already upgraded to Mac OS 9, you need to reinstall your previous version of the Macintosh operating system.
