SYMPTOMS

When you edit a document that was made available offline using Windows 2000, you cannot suspend the computer and may receive the following error message:

Windows cannot go on standby because Microsoft Office documents or application components are being accessed from the network. You must close the open documents or exit the application before you can put the computer on standby.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs under the following conditions:

  • You are using Windows 2000 offline files.

    -and-

  • One of the following is true:
    • You are editing a Microsoft Word or a Microsoft Excel document that has been made available offline.

      -or-

    • You are editing a file that is linked to Microsoft Word or a Microsoft Excel document that has been made available offline.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
