SYMPTOMS

When you view the Advanced tab in the Internet Options dialog box, the Automatically check for Internet Explorer updates and Enable Install On Demand or Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer) check boxes are not selected by default, but clicking Restore Defaults selects them. If you click these check boxes, or click Restore Defaults to select them, their corresponding features still do not work.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the "Automatically check for Internet Explorer updates" and Enable Install On Demand or Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer) features are not available for security reasons in the versions of Internet Explorer that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The Automatically check for Internet Explorer updates and Enable Install On Demand or Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer) check boxes should not appear on the Advanced tab in the Internet Options dialog box for the versions of Internet Explorer that are listed at the beginning of this article.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

In Internet Explorer 6, components that can be installed by using self-installing program files that are registered with Internet Explorer 6 are controlled by the Enable Install on Demand (Other) setting. For Internet Explorer 6 for Windows 2000, only Microsoft Windows Media Player 7 can be installed on demand if the Enable Install On Demand (Other) option is enabled. For Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP, no components can be installed on demand if the Enable Install On Demand (Other) option is turned on.
