Article ID: 254017

Article Last Modified on 1/27/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q254017

SYMPTOMS

When you view the Windows or Windows\System folder as a Web page in Windows Explorer, you may not receive the following message:

Warning

Modifying the contents of this folder may cause your program to stop working correctly.

To view the contents of this folder, click Show Files.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Folder.htt file is missing or damaged, or if it has been replaced with the Folder.htt file from the Windows\Web folder.

RESOLUTION

To enable the "Show files" warning message, rename the existing Folder.htt files in the Windows and Windows\System folders to Folder.bak, and then run Windows 98 Setup again. Extracting the Folder.htt file from the Windows 98 CD-ROM is not sufficient.

For information about how to rename or copy a file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type renaming or copying, and then double-click the "Renaming files" or "Copying files" topic.

NOTE: The Folder.htt file is a hidden file. To verify that you can view hidden files, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
