Windows Base Terminal devices take multiple Terminal Services client access licenses

SYMPTOMS

When you are using some Windows Base Terminal (WBT) devices, additional Terminal Services licenses may be taken when the devices restart and reconnect to the Terminal Services server. Each time the WBT device restarts and reconnects, the Terminal Services server is prompted for a new Terminal Services Client Access License (CAL) from the available pool of licenses. The server gives a new CAL to the WBT device and the CAL pool is reduced until it is completely depleted.

When this behavior occurs, the Terminal Services Licensing service shows the same WBT device listed numerous times. The WBT device may be listed by Internet Protocol (IP) address, or by a Universally Unique Identifier (UUID) where a standard computer displays the computer name. The licenses are dated and time stamped with the time the WBT device reconnected to the Terminal Service server and the Terminal Services CAL was issued to the WBT device.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the WBT device's firmware needs to be upgraded or verified with the manufacturer. Older firmware can enable the WBT device to take a new Terminal Services CAL on every restart. The license is not retained by the firmware and a new license is taken for each restart of the WBT device.

RESOLUTION

Contact the manufacturer of the WBT device to obtain a firmware upgrade or specific support for the make and model of the WBT device. You may be able to obtain additional information or a firmware update from the manufacturer's Web site.
