SYMPTOMS

When you choose to update external links to a closed Microsoft Excel workbook, it takes longer than it did in earlier versions of Excel.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You open a workbook in Excel.


-and-

  • You click Yes when prompted to update the links to another workbook.


-and-

  • The workbook that you are linking to is closed.


-and-

  • The workbook that you are linking to has defined names on multiple sheets.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
