SUMMARY

This article explains how the AutoReply and AutoForward features have been incorporated into Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server and compares it with Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5. It also provides the steps for individually enabling or disabling the AutoReply and AutoForward features.

MORE INFORMATION

The tables below are constructed for each individual build from Exchange Server 5.5 through Exchange 2000, depending on changes made. Read the tables along the rows as they provide the permutations of the dependence (independence) of the one feature in relation to the other.

Exchange Server 5.5

Possibilities Automatic replies (UI provided) Automatic forwarding (No control)
1 Enabled (through UI) Automatically enabled (when AutoReply is enabled)
2 Disabled (through UI) Automatically disabled (when AutoReply is disabled)

Possibilities Automatic replies (UI provided) Automatic forwarding (control through registry)
1 Enabled (through UI) Automatically enabled (when AutoReply is enabled)
2 Disabled (through UI) Automatically disabled (when AutoReply is disabled)
3 Disabled (through UI) Enabled (forcing through registry entry)

1 Enabled (through UI) Enabled (through UI)
2 Disabled (through UI) Disabled (through UI)
3 Disabled (through UI) Enabled (through UI)
4 Enabled (through UI) Disabled (through UI)

Exchange 2000 provides a user interface for automatic forwarding and completely separates the automatic replies from automatic forwarding so that each can be enabled or disabled independently of the other.

To enable or disable the AutoForward and AutoReply feature in Exchange 2000:

  1. Start Exchange System Manager.
  2. In the left-pane, click Global Settings.
  3. In the right-pane, double-click Internet Message Format to populate the right pane with the various defined domains. By default, there is a single domain that represents the wildcard (*).
  4. Right-click the object that represents the domain, and then click Properties.
  5. Click the Advanced tab on the Properties dialog box.
  6. In the Allowed Types section of the Advanced tab, to enable the AutoForward feature, click to select the Automatic forwarding check box. To disable the AutoForward feature, click to clear the Automatic forwarding check box.
  7. In the Allowed Types section of the Advanced tab, to enable the AutoReply feature, click to select the Automatic replies check box. To disable the AutoReply feature, click to clear the Automatic replies check box.
