SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Works 2000 or Microsoft Works Suite 2000, you may receive the following error message:

Setup could not retrieve the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 results.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions are true:

  • There is not enough available space on your hard disk to install Works 2000 or Works Suite 2000 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.
  • An error occured during the installation process.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Verify that Sufficient Space is Available on the Hard Disk

To do this:

  1. On the desktop, double-click My Computer.
  2. Right-click the hard disk that you want to check, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Free space line, note the amount of available space on the hard disk.
  4. Click OK.

To install Works 2000 on a computer on which Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 is installed, you need 120 megabytes (MB) of available hard disk space.

To install Works Suite 2000 on a computer on which Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 is installed, you need 785 MB of available hard disk space (1.4 gigabytes (GB) for a complete installation).

To install Works 2000 or Works 2000 Suite on a computer on which Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 is not installed, you need an additional 78 MB of available space on the hard disk on which Microsoft Windows is installed.

NOTE: Microsoft recommends an additional 50 MB of available hard disk space for the Windows swap file.

If insufficient hard disk space is available on your computer, increase the amount of available hard disk space. To do this:

  1. On the desktop, right-click Recycle Bin, and then click Empty Recycle Bin. If you are prompted to confirm the file deletion, click Yes.
  2. Back up and then remove any files on the hard disk that you do not use frequently.

  1. Delete any unnecessary files on the hard disk.

If sufficient hard disk space is available, proceed to the next method.

Install Internet Explorer 5 Manually, and then Install Works 2000

To do this, use the appropriate method for your version of Microsoft Works 2000.

Works 2000

  1. Insert the Microsoft Works 2000 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down SHIFT as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Setup from starting automatically.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK

    cd-rom:\redist\ie5\ie5setup.exe

    where cd-rom is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Internet Explorer 5.
  5. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.
  6. Click Start, and then click Run.
  7. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK

    cd-rom:\setup.exe

    where cd-rom is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
  8. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Works 2000.

Works Suite 2000

  1. Insert the Works Suite 2000 Disc 4 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down SHIFT as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Setup from starting automatically.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK

    cd-rom:\mhp\redist\ie5\ie5setup.exe

    where cd-rom is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Internet Explorer 5.
  5. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.
  6. Eject the Works Suite 2000 Disc 4 CD-ROM, and then insert the Works Suite 2000 Disc 1 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

    If Works Suite 2000 Setup does not start automatically:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK

      cd-rom:\setup.exe

      where cd-rom is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Works Suite 2000.


MORE INFORMATION

This issue can also occur if insufficient memory is installed in your computer. To run Works 2000 or Works Suite 2000, you need 16 MB or more of memory.

This issue can also occur if you attempt to install the US version of Works 2000 and Internet Explorer 5 on any non-US version of Microsoft Windows.
