SYMPTOMS

When you are running Internet Explorer through Microsoft Proxy Server and you are using challenge/response (NTLM) authentication, users may encounter multiple proxy authentication prompts when they are attempting to use Internet Web sites that are configured to use Distributed Password Authentication (DPA) authentication. There are no problems connecting to the Web sites if the proxy server is bypassed.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer version 5.01 Service Pack 1.
