SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Outlook Express, Indic (Hindi) characters in the To and Subject boxes may be displayed as question marks (?). However, Indic characters in the body of the message are displayed properly.
CAUSE
This issue can occur because the List view is not Unicode-enabled or font-association enabled. Therefore, the Read font must be a font that handles Indic characters.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
You are unable to work around this issue because none of the Font settings handles Indic characters.
MORE INFORMATION
When you click the message and view it in the List view, question marks are displayed in the To box and Subject box. If you double-click the message to open it, question marks are only displayed in the To box. The Subject box contains Indic characters.
To access your font settings, follow these steps:
- Start Outlook Express.
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the Read tab and click Fonts.
The font settings are listed at the top of the Fonts dialog box.
