SUMMARY

Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server offers an Instant Messaging (IM) service component that gives users the ability to communicate with other IM clients in "real-time" as well as determine their current status on the network. Clients must be enabled for Instant Messaging before users may use this service. To enable a client, the routine checks the following three specific areas (listed in the "More Information" section in order of preference) when it is processing the request.

MORE INFORMATION

Service Resource Locator

The IM Enable routine first determines the user's DNS domain name from their SMTP address, for example someone@microsoft.com. Then the routine determines whether a corresponding Domain Name Service (DNS) Service Resource Locator (SRV) exists for the user's domain. If so, the SRV resource information is passed back to the IM Enable routine as the IM Domain Name selection.

Instant Messaging Router

If the IM Enable routine does not find an existing SRV record that corresponds with the user's SMTP domain, the next entry located is whether Instant Messaging router records exist within Active Directory. If entries exist, all Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDNs) from the Instant Messaging router records are returned for selection as the IM Domain Name.

Instant Messaging Home Server

If the IM Enable routine does not find any existing Instant Messaging router records within Active Directory, a final query is done for all available Instant Messaging Home servers in the domain. All IM Home server records found are displayed for selection by the administrator.
