SYMPTOMS

If the LogInitialSourceControlErrors registry key is enabled, the following error message appears in the Application event log:

CAUSE
This problem occurs because the Visual SourceSafe database is on another computer, and the Web server is using Windows NT Challenge/Response (NTLM) authentication. Because the database is on another computer, NTLM cannot, by design, forward your credentials. NTLM only works over the first hop (client to Web server).
WORKAROUND
Enable Basic authentication on the Web server, and do not use NTLM. To do this on a computer running IIS, follow these steps:
- Click Start and then point to Programs.
- Point to Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, and then point to Microsoft Internet Information Server.
- Click Internet Service Manager.
- Right-click the Web site, and then click Properties.
- Click the Directory Security tab.
- Click the Edit button for Anonymous Access and Authentication Control.
- Click to check the Basic Authentication check box.
- Click to uncheck the Windows NT Challenge/Response check box.
- Click OK twice.
