SYMPTOMS

When you run Sbsetrn.exe in BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS), you may receive the following error message:

sbsetrn:cannot resolve wins address (w.x.y.z): error 11004
sbstern:windsupdregister reported an error. error= 11004. exiting.

When this occurs, Sbsetrn does not properly cause mail to be requeued for your domain.

CAUSE

Sbsetrn.exe requires that a Domain Name System (DNS) Reverse Lookup be performed against the IP address of the Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) server. If no "in-addr.arpa" record exists for the WINS server, Sbsetrn generates the error message.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method:

  • Ask your mail provider to create a Reverse Lookup record for the WINS server. This allows Sbsetrn to function properly and retrieve the WINS server's Reverse Lookup address.
  • Procure a static IP address from your ISP, negating the need to use Sbsetrn. If your computer is using a static IP address, there is no need to use Sbsetrn. Sbsetrn functions in two steps: The first step registers the server's name and dynamic IP address with the WINS server. The second step connects to the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) server to send the ETRN command to requeue your mail. With a static IP address, you do not have to register with the WINS server; the Internet Mail service (IMS) can be used to send the ETRN command to the SMTP server.
  • Run Sbsetrn with the -w switch, specifying the WINS server by its fully qualified domain name (FQDN). Sbsetrn performs the Reverse Lookup only if it is attempting to work with the IP address of the WINS Server. When you provide the FQDN, it is not necessary to convert the IP address to a name, only the name to the IP address.
