Functionality Loss on NDR Processing Control After Upgrading from MCIS 1.0 to 2.0

Article ID: 241197

Article Last Modified on 10/26/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Commercial Internet System 2.0
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q241197

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) 1.0, you can define the name of the postmaster account that can be used to send non-delivery reports (NDRs). There is also a check box that controls whether this account gets a copy of each NDR.

In MCIS 2.0, there is a single field called Send copy of non-delivery report to. If this field is set, NDRs are sent from the postmaster account, which also receives a copy of each NDR. If this is left blank, NDRs are sent from the postmaster@default-domain account.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

File name Version
Smtpsvc.dll 5.5.21877.32

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet Server version 2.0.

MORE INFORMATION

After you install the new .dll file, you must take the following steps to use the new functionality and prevent delivery reports from being sent to the address used to generate the NDRs:

Add the string (*) at the end of the e-mail address in the Send a copy of non-delivery report to box. For example:

user@microsoft.us(*)

In other words, if the Send a copy of non-delivery report to field ends with the string (*), the SMTP address before it is used to generate the NDR, but this address will not receive a copy of the NDR itself. If the address doesn't contain the (*) string, it will receive a copy. This matches the same feature in MCIS 1.0.
