Dumping the Cache through the Internet Explorer Preferences Menu Does Not Free Up Disk Space

Article ID: 240706

Article Last Modified on 11/14/2003

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.5 for Macintosh
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 for Macintosh
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q240706

SYMPTOMS

After you empty the cache in Microsoft Internet Explorer (On the Edit menu, click Preferences, and then click Empty Now), no disk space is freed up.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Internet Explorer 4.x uses a fixed-size file for its cache.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, you can decrease the size of the Cache.waf file to increase hard disk space. To do this:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
  3. In the Web Browser section, click Advanced.
  4. In the Cache section, specify the new cache size.
  5. Click OK, close, and then restart Internet Explorer.

MORE INFORMATION

The Cache.waf file, in the folder selected for the Internet Explorer cache, is always the size that is specified in the Internet Explorer cache preferences.
