SYMPTOMS

When you use Windows Media Player and Windows Media Server on the same computer, while using a server-side play list with several stream sources for a program, the Windows Media Player may rebuffer between the first or second stream switch. When this occurs, there is no rebuffering at any stream switching.

This does not occur if the Windows Media Player is on another computer.

CAUSE

The rebuffering occurs on the first or second switch. Rebuffering happens in all kinds of server-side play lists, regardless of whether it only includes on-demand, or both live and on-demand, whether the stream switches at the end of the stream, or after a certain duration before the end of stream.

WORKAROUND

Use the Windows Media Player on a computer other than the computer running Windows Media Server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
