SYMPTOMS

When you run Setup for Office 2000, you may experience one of the following problems:

  • The following error message appears:

Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install.

When you click OK to this message, the following alert appears:

    The <package name> completed successfully.

where <package name> is the name of an updater for Office 2000. For example:

    Office Jet/ODBC/IISAM Update

    -or-

  • The error message listed above does not appear; however, your installation is not patched by the updater you included in your transform.

CAUSE

The symptoms described in the "Symptoms" section of this article occur if all of the following are true:

  • You run Setup using a transform created by the Custom Installation Wizard (CIW).- and -

  • When you create the transform, you specify an additional program to run with Setup.- and -

  • The additional program you specify in the Custom Installation Wizard is an updater containing a Windows Installer patch file (.msp). For example, the patch file JetCopkg.exe contains the following .msp file: OQFE3821.msp.

When the updater is run during Office Setup, you are essentially running two Windows Installer Setups at the same time. Unless you are chaining together two Office product installations using the enhanced version of Setup.exe, you can only run one Windows Installer Setup at a time.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not include an updater containing an .msp file in your transform. Instead, update your administrative installation with the patch and then install Office.

Patching Your Administrative Installation

To update your administrative installation with a patch file, do the following:

NOTE: The following steps use the patch file JetCopkg.exe for illustrative purposes. If you are working with a different updater, please see the documentation that comes with the updater before applying these steps.

  1. Download the updater from the Microsoft Web site.
  2. On the Start menu, click Run.
  3. In the Open edit box, type the following command line and then click OK:

    <path>\JetCopkg.exe /c /t:c:\Jetco

where <path> is the path to the downloaded JetCopkg.exe file.
  4. Click Yes to the License Agreement. This expands the updater files into the C:\Jetco folder. One of these files is OQFE3821.msp.

  5. On the Start menu, click Run.
  6. In the Open edit box, type the following command line and then click OK:

    msiexec /a <Admin Path>\Data1.msi /p c:\test\oqfe3821.msp SHORTFILENAMES=1

where <Admin Path> is the path to your administrative installation point for Office 2000.

NOTE: You must run this command from a computer that already has the Windows Installer installed.
  7. Type your CD key in the CD Key boxes and then click Next.
  8. Click I accept the terms in the License Agreement and then click Next.
  9. Click Install Now.
  10. After the update of your Administrative installation is finished, run Office Setup on your workstations. If Office was already installed on the workstations before updating the Administrative installation with the patch, please follow the steps in the next section. Otherwise, just run Setup from the newly patched Administrative installation.NOTE: If you continue to use a transform with Office Setup, make sure to remove the updater that contains the patch file from the transform, by using the Custom Installation Wizard. Otherwise, the issues described in the "Symptoms" section of this article will continue to occur.

Updating Existing Workstations from the Administrative Installation

If you installed Office from your Administration installation before you applied the patch on the Administrative installation, then you must update these workstations. To do this, do the following steps:

  1. Log on to a workstation with Office installed.
  2. On Start menu, click Run, type the following command in the Open edit text box, and then click OK:

    msiexec /i <Admin Path>\Data1.msi REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus

where <Admin Path> is the path to your administrative installation point for Office 2000.
  3. Click OK to the message that Setup was completed.
  4. Click Yes if you are prompted to restart your computer.

MORE INFORMATION

When you create a transform using the Custom Installation Wizard (CIW), you can add programs to your Office installation in the Add Installations and Run Programs dialog box. However, when you click Add, there is a warning in the Add/Modify Program Entry dialog box:

The target cannot be a Windows Installation package (*.MSI, *.MST, or *.MSP) or a program (MSIEXEC.EXE or maybe SETUP.EXE) that launches such a package.

If you ignore this warning, you will experience the symptoms described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
