256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry

SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows 2000, the following event ID message may be logged in the System event log:

Event: 2506
Source: Server
The value named IRPStackSize in the server's Registry key LanmanServer\Parameters was invalid. The value was ignored, and processing continued.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you set the IRPStackSize registry value (manually or programmatically) to less than 11 decimal. By default, the IRPStackSize value is set to 15 in Windows 2000. Note that the minimum setting that is permitted is 11.

To set this value, double-click the IRPStackSize value, click DWORD on the Edit menu, type 15, and then click OK (make sure that decimal is selected under Base.)

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To return the IRPStackSize value to the default setting:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedt32, and then press Enter.
  3. Locate and then click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanmanserver\Parameters

  4. Click the IRPStackSize value.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  6. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart Windows 2000.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The valid values range from 0xB to 0x20 (11 to 32). The default value is 15. For more information, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
