The Exchange Group Disappears from the Start Menu

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Inbox icon on the desktop on an Exchange server, Microsoft Windows Messaging may be installed. When this occurs, the Microsoft Exchange submenu is removed from the Start menu under the All Users profile. The program group and shortcuts are removed, but the files are not removed.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Windows Messaging 1.0 is installed on the Exchange server. Windows Messaging 1.0 should not be installed on an Exchange server. The Windows Messaging client resembles the Exchange 32-bit client that is included with Exchange versions earlier than 5.5.

RESOLUTION

You can re-create the Microsoft Exchange menu by reinstalling Exchange Administrator in Exchange Server Setup and reinstalling Microsoft Exchange Service Pack 2 (SP2) or the latest Exchange service pack.

You can also manually re-create the shortcuts. To do so:

  1. Create a folder named Microsoft Exchange in the following location:

    %SystemRoot%\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs

  2. Inside this folder, create the following shortcuts:
    • Shortcut Location: %SystemDrive%\ExchSrvr\bin\admin.exe
      Shortcut Name: Microsoft Exchange Administrator
    • Shortcut Location: %SystemDrive%\ExchSrvr\bin\mailmig.exe
      Shortcut Name: Microsoft Exchange Migration Wizard
    • Shortcut Location: %SystemDrive%\ExchSrvr\bin\perfwiz.exe
      Shortcut Name: Microsoft Exchange Optimizer
    • Shortcut Location: %SystemDrive%\ExchSrvr\bin\exhealth.pmw
      Shortcut Name: Microsoft Exchange Server Health
    • Shortcut Location: %SystemDrive%\ExchSrvr\bin\imcqueue.pmw
      Shortcut Name: Microsoft Exchange Server IMS Queues
    • Shortcut Location: %SystemDrive%\ExchSrvr\bin\imcstats.pmw
      Shortcut Name: Microsoft Exchange Server IMS Statistics
    • Shortcut Location: %SystemDrive%\ExchSrvr\bin\imsflow.pmw
      Shortcut Name: Microsoft Exchange Server IMS Traffic
    • Shortcut Location: %SystemDrive%\ExchSrvr\bin\exload.pmw
      Shortcut Name: Microsoft Exchange Server Load
    • Shortcut Location: %SystemDrive%\ExchSrvr\bin\exqueues.pmw
      Shortcut Name: Microsoft Exchange Server Queues
    • Shortcut Location: %SystemDrive%\ExchSrvr\bin\exusers.pmw
