SYMPTOMS

When you connect to your Internet Service Provider to retrieve e-mail from a POP server, your password is not retained even though you have specified to save the password.

CAUSE

The registry contains incorrect information for the Protected Storage System Provider key for the user account.

RESOLUTION

Remove the user account information from the Protected Storage System Provider registry key, and re-enter your password options.

MORE INFORMATION

The steps to resolve the behavior described in the Symptoms section of this article vary slightly depending on the operation system you are using.

Windows 95 and Windows 98

If your password is not being retained and you are using either Windows 95 or Windows 98, follow these steps:

  1. Close all running programs. On the Windows Start menu, click Run. In the Open box, type regedit. Click OK.
  2. In the Registry Editor, click to navigate to the following registry path:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider
                            
  3. Click the plus sign next to the Protected Storage System Provider key. The user subkey folder appears indented to the right of the main key. Right-click the Default subkey, and then click Delete.NOTE: If user profiles are enabled on the computer, you will see subfolders for each user below the main Protected Storage System Provider key. If all users are experiencing the same difficulty, you should delete the subkey for each user and following the remaining steps for each user account definition.

  4. On the Registry menu, click Exit, and then restart the computer.
  5. On the Windows Start menu, click Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click the Mail icon.
  6. In Internet Accounts, click to select the Internet Mail account that is not able to retain the password, and then click Properties.
  7. On the Server tab, type the password and click to select a the Remember Password check box. Click Apply, click OK and then click Close to exit the Mail control panel.NOTE: If user profiles are enabled on the computer and you deleted the default Protected Storage System Provider subkey for other users in step 3, you will need to re-type the password and reselect the Remember Password option for those user's mail profile as well.

  8. Start Outlook. Use the Send and Receive command to test the password retention.

Windows NT 4.0

If your password is not being retained and you are using Windows NT 4.0, follow these steps:

NOTE: If you are a Windows NT 4.0 user, you must have administrator permissions to edit the system registry.

  1. Close all running programs. On the Windows Start menu, click Run, and then in the Open box. Type "regedt32" (without the quotes). Click OK.
  2. On the Registry Editor Window menu, click HKEY_CURRENT_USER on Local Machine. Navigate to the following registry path:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider
                            
  3. Click to select the Protected Storage System Provider key. On the Security menu, click Permissions. In Registry Key Permissions, click to select the Replace Permission on Existing Sub keys check box.
  4. In the Name list, make sure that the user currently logged on has Full Control access. Click OK. A dialog box displaying the following message will appear:

    Do you want to replace the permission on all existing subkeys within Protected Storage System Provider?

    Click Yes.
  5. Click to select the user subkey folder, and then press the Delete key.NOTE: If other Windows NT users are experiencing the same password retention difficulty, you should delete the subkey folder for each user and follow the remaining steps for each NT user account definition.

  6. On the Windows Start menu, click Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click the Mail icon.
  7. In Internet Accounts, click to select the Internet Mail account that is not able to retain the password, and then click Properties.
  8. On the Server tab, type the password and click to select the Remember Password check box. Click Apply, click OK, and then click Close to exit the Mail control panel.NOTE: If other NT users were experiencing password retention problems and you deleted the default Protected Storage System Provider subkey for these users in step 5, you will need to re-enter and reselect the Remember Password option for those user's mail profile as well.

  9. Start Outlook, and use the Send and Receive command to test the password retention.
