SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to add player animations in Links Extreme, no animations may be listed in the Add/Modify Golfer Animations box.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions are true:

  • A Toshiba SD-M1202 DVD-ROM drive is installed in your computer.

  • 16-bit (real mode) CD-ROM drivers are installed on your computer.

  • The Links Extreme CD-ROM is damaged or dirty.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

NOTE: If a Toshiba SD-M1202 DVD-ROM drive is not installed in your computer, skip to the "Make Sure You Are Using Protected Mode CD-ROM Drivers" method.

Disable DMA Support for the DVD-ROM Drive

To disable DMA support for the DVD-ROM drive:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. Click the Device Manager tab.
  4. Click the plus sign (+) next to CDROM to expand the branch.
  5. Click the Toshiba SD-M1202 DVD-ROM, and then click Properties.
  6. Click the Settings tab, and then click to clear the DMA check box.
  7. Click OK, and then click OK or Close.

Reduce CD-ROM Drive Caching

To reduce CD-ROM drive caching:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. Click the Performance tab, and then click File System.
  4. Click the CD-ROM tab.
  5. Move the Supplemental cache size slider all the way to the left (the Small setting).
  6. In the Optimize access pattern for box, click No read-ahead.
  7. Click OK, and then click Close.
  8. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.

If the issue continues to occur, optimize CD-ROM drive caching for single-speed CD-ROM drives. To do this, repeat these steps and click Single-speed drives in the Optimize access pattern for box.

If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Eject The CD-ROM from the DVD-ROM Drive

To do this:

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. Right click the DVD-ROM drive, and then click Eject.
  3. Reinsert the Links Extreme CD-ROM into the DVD-ROM drive.

NOTE: You must use the steps listed above. Pressing the eject button on the DVD-ROM drive and then reinserting the CD-ROM does not resolve this issue.

If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Make Sure You Are Using Protected Mode CD-ROM Drivers

Make sure you are using protected mode (32-bit) drivers for your CD-ROM drive. To do this:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. Click the Performance tab, and then confirm that the File System entry is 32-bit. If the File System entry is "Some drives are using MS-DOS compatibility," you may be using real mode (16-bit) CD-ROM drivers. If this is the case, you may be unable to read certain files on the compact disc.

Contact the manufacturer of your CD-ROM drive to obtain an updated, protected mode driver for your CD-ROM drive.

  1. Click OK, and then close Control Panel.

For additional information about how to troubleshoot CD-ROM read errors, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

218617 How to Troubleshoot CD-ROM Read Issues

Inspect and Clean the Links Extreme CD-ROM

Inspect the CD-ROM for visible deformation or scratches. If the disc is damaged, contact Microsoft Sales at 800-360-7561 to obtain a replacement CD-ROM. You can also order it online at:

If the disc does not appear to be damaged, clean the CD-ROM.

To clean the CD-ROM, use a CD-ROM cleaning kit, or gently wipe the shiny side of the CD-ROM with a soft, lint-free cotton cloth. Do not use paper cloth which can scratch the plastic and leave streaks. When you clean the CD-ROM, wipe from the center of the disc outward; do not use a circular motion.

If the CD-ROM still does not perform properly, clean the disc with a damp cloth using water or a commercial compact disc cleaning solution. Dry the disc thoroughly and then test the disc again.

If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.
