SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to view or run an e-mail attachment in Outlook Express for UNIX, the attachment may not run or you may be unable to view it. When this occurs, clicking the attached file produces no dialog box or error message.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if there is no external program associated with the attachment's file type.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, configure Microsoft Internet Explorer to specify which program to use when opening a file.

Internet Explorer 4.01 for UNIX

  1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the View menu, and then click the Mapping tab.
  2. To define a new file type, click New Extension.
  3. In the Description box, type a description of the file type.
  4. In the Extension(s) box, type the extension for the file type.

NOTE: A period (.) is required at the beginning of the extension. If you list multiple extensions for this file type, you must separate each extension with a colon (:).

  1. In the MIME Type box, type the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) type, or click a type in the list.
  2. In the Command Line box, type the program used to run the file, followed by a space and the characters %1.

NOTE: You can also add command-line switches between the program name and "%1" in the command line. If you do not know the program's file name or location, you can click Browse to locate the program file.

  1. Click Apply Association, click Apply, and then click OK.

Internet Explorer 5 for UNIX

  1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu, and then click the Associations tab.
  2. To define a new file type, click New Association.

  1. Click OK, click Apply, and then click OK.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
