SYMPTOMS

When the length of the path of the system environment variable is longer than 517 characters, and you attempt to create a completed report file on Winmsd.exe, Winmsd.exe causes an access violation and the report file becomes corrupted.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Winmsd.exe has a 517 character buffer limit.

RESOLUTION

Windows NT Server or Workstation 4.0

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT Server version 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 6.
