SYMPTOMS

When you start one of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may experience either of the following symptoms:

  • The game may stop responding (hang).
  • The sounds in the game may be garbled.

In addition, sounds in the game may not be played.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if your sound card does not support Microsoft DirectX or if the sound drivers are outdated.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, contact your audio hardware manufacturer to obtain and install the latest version of the driver for your sound card. For information about how to contact the manufacturer of your sound card, see the "More Information" section of this article. You may also visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site to see if applicable driver updates are available:

To identify the name and provider of your sound card, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type DXDIAG, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Sound tab
  4. Under Device, look for Name, and under Driver, look for Provider.
  5. Click Exit.
