SYMPTOMS

When you create a domain namespace with a root with only a one-character suffix, the Dcpromo.exe tool does not allow you to proceed. For example, the following sample domain namespaces have a one-character suffix:

  • company.i
  • sales.z

CAUSE

This is a restriction that is imposed by the Active Directory namespace design. By default, two-character (or more) suffixes are assumed to be a 3166 two-letter country code, or an exact match on a friendly country or organization (such as US or UK).

RESOLUTION

Designate at least two or more characters for the root domain namespace.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
