SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start Microsoft WebTV for Windows, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot display this channel. Check your TV tuner card and make sure other video applications (e.g., DVD Player) are not running.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if Microsoft Windows Media Player is running in the background and is started before WebTV for Windows.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this problem from occurring, start WebTV for Windows first, and then start Windows Media Player.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

You can view a video stream using WebTV for Windows and Windows Media Player simultaneously on the same computer. After the display for WebTV for Windows is initialized, the video can be displayed with Windows Media Player.
