SYMPTOMS

When you double-click the Uninstall MSIE5 icon to uninstall Internet Explorer 5, you may receive one or more of the following error messages:

  • Application Execution Error

    Cannot find file drive:\path\setup.exe (or one of its components). Check to ensure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

    Internet Explorer and other Internet Tools

    Setup could not retrieve the information needed for the installation.

    The network is probably busy. Please run Setup again later.

    Internet Explorer and other Internet Tools

    Microsoft Internet Tools was not successfully installed.

CAUSE

These error messages can occur if files are absent from the Internet Explorer 5 Setup folder.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:

  • Download the Internet Explorer 5 installation files again. To do this, click the Download Only option during Setup, and download the same components to the original Setup folder.
  • Manually remove Internet Explorer 5. For information about manually removing Internet Explorer 5, please see the section titled "Uninstall Internet Explorer 5 and other Internet Tools" in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
