SYMPTOMS

When you install a fax printer, it may not be displayed in the Manage Faxes tool in the BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) console. In addition, when you create new users or modify user permissions with the Add User Wizard, the list of shared fax printers may be incomplete.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you log on as a user who does not have appropriate permissions for the fax printer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

  1. In Control Panel, double-click Printers.
  2. Right-click the fax printer that is not displayed in the console. The following error message is displayed:

You do not have access to the printer; only the Security tab will be displayed.

  3. Click OK.
  4. Click Permissions.
  5. Add the account you are currently using with Full Control Access permissions, and then click OK.

STATUS

This problem was corrected in Small Business Server 4.5.

MORE INFORMATION

In SBS 4.5, if you use the SBS Console Wizard to remove all users' access privileges to a printer, the following warning message is displayed:

You have removed all users from accessing this printer. If you continue, you will not be able to manage this printer using the SBS console. The only way to manage this printer in the future is to use the Printer Control Panel. Continue?

No warning message is displayed in SBS 4.0 or 4.0a.
