This article was previously published under Q224800

SYMPTOMS

If you have an Intel 82557-based, 82558-based, or 82559-based network adapter installed in your Small Business Server (SBS) computer, SBS 4.5 Setup does not detect and install the adapter. You must install the adapter manually from the Hardware Confirmation page during Setup.

CAUSE

In earlier versions of SBS, Setup detects Intel 82558-based or 82559-based network adapters as an Intel 82557 network adapter, which does not work.

This behavior occurs because version 2.02 of the E100b.sys driver included with SBS 4.0 includes controller-specific code that is not compatible with the Intel 82558 and 82559 controllers. This driver and subsequent drivers (through version 2.20) were developed for use with the Intel 82557 Fast Ethernet controller.

RESOLUTION

If you click Next on the Hardware Confirmation page without manually installing the driver for your network adapter, you receive a message stating that no network adapter is installed. Click No when you are prompted whether you want to continue. This returns you to the Hardware Confirmation page. You can then use the following steps to resolve the issue:

  1. On the Hardware Confirmation page, click Change, and then click Network.
  2. Click the Adapters tab.
  3. Click MS Loopback Adapter, and then click Remove.
  4. When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click OK.
  5. Click Add, and then click Have Disk.
  6. Insert the disk containing the network adapter driver.
  7. Click OK, and then click the appropriate adapter type. Acknowledge any messages that appear.
  8. Click the Bindings tab, and open the tree view so that you can see the network adapter listed under each binding type. Move your network adapter to the top of each list.
  9. Click Close. The TCP/IP Properties dialog box appears.
  10. Click Specify an IP address.
  11. In the Internet Protocol address box, type 10.0.0.2.
  12. In the Subnet Mask box, type 255.255.255.0.
  13. Click the WINS Address tab.
  14. In the Primary WINS Server address and Secondary WINS Server address boxes, type 10.0.0.2.
  15. Click OK, and then click Yes to restart the computer.

After the computer restarts, SBS Setup continues automatically.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install a network adapter, make sure that you use the Have Disk option instead of selecting an Intel network adapter from the list in Network properties.

If you manually install the driver for your network adapter during SBS Setup, you must remove the MS Loopback Adapter and adjust the adapter's binding order.

The latest Intel drivers are available from the following Intel Web:
