WD2000: "Preparing to Install..." Message When Word Is Started

Q224694

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Word 2000, a dialog box for the Windows Installer appears with the following message:

Preparing to install...

This is followed by another dialog box, with the following message:

Please wait while Windows configures Office Edition

where Office Edition is the edition of Microsoft Office 2000 that is installed on your computer.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs by design after you run Microsoft Word 97 for Windows and then start Microsoft Word 2000 on the same system. Microsoft Word 2000 must reinstall, or re-register, itself in the Windows Registry.

The Windows Installer is designed to automatically find and fix errors when a Microsoft Office 2000 program is started.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Office 97 programs are self-registering by design. As it starts, Word 97 enters information into the system registry associating itself with the ".doc" file extension type.

Subsequently, when Word 2000 is started, its resiliency features check the appropriate registry entries. Upon determining that Word 2000 is not the associated program for ".doc" file type, Word 2000 starts the Windows Installer to correct the entry.
