SYMPTOMS

When you use the version of Microsoft Backup included with Windows NT 4.0 to restore NTFS data that was backed up with the version of Backup included with Windows 2000, you may receive the following error message:

Error writing alternate file data, you do not have permission to access portions of file path. Please see owner or administrator to get permission.

CAUSE

The Backup tools included with Windows NT and Windows 2000 create backup tapes that are compatible with each other. This is because both Backup programs write data to the tape using Microsoft Tape Format (MTF). However, the version of the NTFS file system included with Windows 2000 includes additional file system features that the Windows NT 4.0 version of NTFS does not support. When the Windows NT 4.0 version of NTFS encounters a file or folder that uses one of these new features, it cannot successfully restore it.

NOTE: you should be able to restore Windows 2000 NTFS data unless it has NTFS 5.0 specific features (reparse points, sparse files, EFS, quotas, etc...).

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft recommends that in order to maintain data integrity and compatibility, Windows 2000 NTFS data backed up from Windows 2000 be restored to a Windows 2000 NTFS partition managed by Windows 2000.
