SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade from Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x and Microsoft Internet Mail and News, to Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook, Internet Mail and News is not detected when Outlook runs for the first time. Additionally, if you attempt to manually import mail and addresses, the addresses are not imported.

CAUSE

The installation of Microsoft Outlook Express 5 with Internet Explorer 5, replaces the Internet Mail and News entry in a registry key, causing it not to be detected.

RESOLUTION

Use the import feature in Outlook Express to import the account settings, mail, and addresses, and then import using the Outlook Import/Export Wizard.

MORE INFORMATION

After installing Microsoft Office or Outlook, start Outlook Express. You will receive a message stating that Outlook Express needs to migrate settings from an older version of Outlook Express. This action will use the Internet Connection Wizard (ICW) to confirm the settings from Internet Mail and News. If there are changes to be made to the account settings, you can make them in the appropriate places as the ICW is running.

To Import Messages to Outlook

  1. In Outlook Express, on the File menu, point to Import, and then click Messages.
  2. In the Select an e-mail program to import from list, click to select Microsoft Internet Mail (32-bit Version), and click Next.
  3. In Location of Messages, confirm the location of stored messages, or click Browse to locate the proper message store. Click Next, and then click Finish.

To Import Addresses to Outlook

  1. In Outlook Express, on the File menu, point to Import, and then click Address Book.
  2. In Select an Address Book to Import from, locate the Windows Address Book (WAB), and click Open. The addresses are imported.

To Import Outlook Express Items to Outlook

Outlook will detect the presence of Outlook Express versions 4 and 5, during the First Run phase. You can import account settings, messages, and addresses at this time, or you can manually import them if you have already configured Outlook.

To Import Outlook Express Account Settings to Outlook

  1. On the File menu, click Import and Export.
  2. In Choose an action to perform, click Import Internet Mail Account Settings. Click Next.
  3. The Internet Connection Wizard starts with Outlook Express selected. Click Next through the wizard to complete migration of the settings.

To Import Messages and Addresses

  1. Start Outlook if it is not currently running.
  2. On the File menu, click Import and Export. In the Choose an Action to Perform list, click Import Internet Mail and Addresses.
  3. In the Select the product for which you wish to convert items from list, click Outlook Express 4.x, 5. Click Next.
  4. Import Mail, Import Address Book, and Import Rules, are selected by default. Click to clear the check box for any items you do not wish to import, otherwise click Next to accept the default selections, and click Next.
  5. Select a destination for the imported address data. The destination depends on the type of Outlook installation you selected initially.
    1. The Internet Mail Only installation of Outlook 98 allows only the Contacts folder as the destination.
    2. The Corporate or Workgroup option allows either Personal Address Book, or Outlook Contacts.
  6. Select the appropriate duplicate items option. Click Finish to complete the import.

NOTE: With the exception of rules conversion from Outlook Express, the steps to convert addresses is the same.

If you have upgraded from Windows 3.1 to a Microsoft 32-bit operating system, and previously used the 16-bit version of Interent Mail for Windows 3.1, you can migrate messages and addresses first into Outlook Express, using the same procedures as outlined, and then into Outlook. When choosing the import options for messages and addresses, select "Microsoft Internet Mail for Windows 3.1" in each case.
