SYMPTOMS
You may experience one or more of the following issues with Hotmail, which is included with Outlook Express 5 and later:
- When you attempt to manually delete messages in the Deleted Items folder, you may receive the following error message:
- Two Inboxes may be displayed.
- You may be unable to create rules or filters for your Hotmail account.
- When you attempt to synchronize your address book with Hotmail, your contacts may not be updated.
- When you receive Hotmail messages, they may not contain the entire date or time.
- "New Mail Notification" does not work with a Hotmail account.
CAUSE
The Server Does Not Support Manual Deletion of Messages
Hotmail periodically deletes messages from the Deleted Items folder and does not require you to manually delete your messages.
Two Inboxes Are Displayed
When you create a Hotmail account, it creates a separate Inbox for the Hotmail account.
You Cannot Create Rules or Filters
Outlook Express does not support rules or filters for Hotmail accounts.
Contacts May Not Be Updated When Synchronizing Address Book with Hotmail
The address book is synchronizing with non-Latin-based character sets.
Hotmail Messages Do Not Have Entire Date or Time
Outlook Express is not able to provide entire date, time, and time zone information.
RESOLUTION
To work around the issue, use the appropriate method:
Two Inboxes Are Displayed
Outlook Express can use and display multiple e-mail accounts. The Inbox in the Local folder is associated with Post Office Protocol (POP3) accounts from your Internet service provider (ISP). The Inbox in the Hotmail account is strictly for Hotmail accounts.
You Cannot Create Rules or Filters
You can use your Hotmail account to create filters. For information about creating filters for a Hotmail account, please contact Hotmail Technical Support.
