SYMPTOMS

While using Outlook, you see a new mail icon appear on the taskbar, but you do not see a new mail message.

CAUSE

You are using Net Folders to share information with other users and you receive updates to the shared folder.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior also occurs when an Outlook Rule moves a mail item to a folder other than the Inbox.

To share information among users, Net Folders uses hidden Rich Text Format (RTF) messages to send updated Outlook items such as Contacts, Appointments and Tasks. When the update occurs, a mail message is delivered to the Inbox, and is moved to the appropriate folder by an Outlook Rule. This process displays the envelope icon in the status area of the taskbar.
