SYMPTOMS
If you open a file, such as a Microsoft Excel workbook, from a public folder, it may open as read-only one time and editable another time. The behavior is different when you open the file from the table view, versus the preview pane in Outlook.
CAUSE
The preview pane does not open a file or object for editing; it opens items for preview in a read-only state.
If you browse a public folder and have the preview pane turned on, you will see the files in the public folder listed both in the preview pane and in the table view of Outlook. Double-clicking a file in the table view opens the file for editing, while double-clicking a file in the preview pane opens the file as read-only.
