Err Msg: Cannot Access the Port. It May Be in Use by Another Program When Trying to Print

SYMPTOMS

When you try to print to an HP Laserjet printer, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot access the port. It may be in use by another program when trying to print.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Hppropty.exe program is running.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, quit Hppropty.exe, and then rename the Hppropty.exe program to Hppropty.bak. For information about how to rename a file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type renaming files, overview, and then click Display.

This issue occurs when you install the HP Printer drivers. but you use the Windows 98 printer drivers.
