SUMMARY

This article contains macro code samples that demonstrate the use of the following WordBasic statements or functions:

  • Inserting section breaks
  • Inserting page breaks
  • Inserting column breaks

To illustrate the following macro samples, create a sample Word document that contains three or more paragraphs of text. For additional information about creating sample text in a Word document, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To Insert a Section Break

Use the following macro sample to insert a continuous section break at the location of the insertion point:

Sub InsertContinuousBreak()
   Selection.InsertBreak Type:=wdSectionBreakContinuous
End Sub

Use the following macro sample to insert a continuous section break before and after the second paragraph of your Word document and then change the left and right margins of the new section:

Sub InsertContinuousBreaks()
    With ActiveDocument.Paragraphs(2).Range
        .Collapse direction:=wdCollapseEnd
        .InsertBreak Type:=wdSectionBreakContinuous

        With ActiveDocument.Paragraphs(2).Range
            .Collapse direction:=wdCollapseStart
            .InsertBreak Type:=wdSectionBreakContinuous
        End With

    ActiveDocument.Sections(2).PageSetup.LeftMargin = 180
    ActiveDocument.Sections(2).PageSetup.RightMargin = 180

    End With
End Sub

To Insert a Page Break

Use the following macro sample to insert a page break at the location of the insertion point:

Sub InsertPageBreak()
   Selection.InsertBreak Type:=wdPageBreak
End Sub

Use the following macro sample to insert a page break after the second paragraph of your Word document:

Sub InsertPageBreak()
    With ActiveDocument.Paragraphs(2).Range
        .Collapse direction:=wdCollapseEnd
        .InsertBreak Type:=wdPageBreak
    End With
End Sub

To Insert a Column Break

Use the following macro sample to insert a column break at the location of the insertion point:

Sub InsertColumnBreak()
   Selection.InsertBreak Type:=wdPageBreak
End Sub

Use the following macro sample to format your Word document as three columns and then to insert a column break before and after the second paragraph of your Word document. The macro then leaves the second paragraph in the second column of the document:

Sub InsertColumnBreaks()

   If ActiveWindow.View.SplitSpecial <> wdPaneNone Then
      ActiveWindow.Panes(2).Close
   End If
   If ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.Type <> wdPrintView Then
      ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.Type = wdPrintView
   End If
   With ActiveDocument.PageSetup.TextColumns
      .SetCount NumColumns:=3
   End With

   With ActiveDocument.Paragraphs(2).Range
      .Collapse direction:=wdCollapseEnd
      .InsertBreak Type:=wdColumnBreak

      With ActiveDocument.Paragraphs(2).Range
         .Collapse direction:=wdCollapseStart
         .InsertBreak Type:=wdColumnBreak
      End With

   End With
End Sub
