SUMMARY

The English International version of BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) includes English versions of all the client programs. In some environments, you may want to have the Small Business Server client Setup wizards install non-English programs.

This article describes how to enable the Set Up Computer Wizard (SCW) to install non-English client programs. This article addresses the specific example of configuring a French client to connect to an International English version of SBS. The procedure can be modified to address other languages.

The article describes how to enable SCW to install non-English versions of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4), Microsoft Internet Explorer 5, Microsoft Outlook 2000, and Microsoft Office 2000. For the procedure to work, you must already either have purchased or downloaded each of the above programs with the appropriate number of licenses in the required language.

MORE INFORMATION

To configure the server to install non-English client programs, use the following method. In all cases, "%SBSServer%" refers to the name of the Small Business Server.

  1. Delete the English version of SP4 by deleting the Sp4i386.exe file from the \\%SBSServer%\Clientapps\Ms\Winntsp4 folder.
  2. Delete the Office 2000 CD-ROM 1 components, which include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Outlook 2000, and Internet Explorer 5, by deleting the CD1 folder from the \\%SBSServer%\Clientapps\Ms\Office folder.
  3. Delete the Office 2000 CD-ROM 2 components (if installed), which include Microsoft Publisher and Small Business Tools, by deleting the CD2 folder from the \\%SBSServer%\Clientapps\Ms\Office folder.
  4. Copy the French-language version of SP4 to \\%SBSServer%\Clientapps\Ms\Winntsp4\Sp4i386.exe.

    NOTE: The service pack must be named Sp4i386.exe.
  5. Insert Office 2000 CD-ROM 1, or the Outlook 2000 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  6. Perform an administrative installation of Office 2000 CD-ROM 1 or of Outlook 2000 by running drive:\install.exe /a, where drive is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.
  7. Type the correct CD Key number and organization name.
  8. Accept the End User License Agreement.
  9. Change the installation location to \\%SBSServer%\Clientapps\Ms\Office\Cd1.
  10. Wait for the installation to finish. After Setup is finished, click Finish and remove the CD-ROM.
  11. If you are installing Office 2000:
    1. Insert Office 2000 CD-ROM 2 in the CD-ROM drive.
    2. Perform an administrative installation of Office 2000 CD-ROM 2 by running drive:\install.exe /a, where drive is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.
    3. Type the correct CD Key number and organization name.
    4. Accept the End User License Agreement.
    5. Change the installation location to \\%SBSServer%\Clientapps\Ms\Office\Cd2.
    6. Wait for the installation to finish. After Setup is finished, click Finish and remove the CD-ROM.
  12. Edit the %SystemDrive%\Smallbusiness\Template\Cliie.inf file. Change the following line from

    ie_lang = "en"

    to:

    ie_lang = "fr"

    NOTE: The "ie_lang" variable depends on the specific language you are installing. The variable name is always the same as the name of the folder immediately under \\%SBSServer%\Clientapps\Ms\Office\Cd1\Ie5.

  13. Save the file, and quit the editor.

Any client set up after you follow this procedure is installed with French versions of SP4, Office 2000, Internet Explorer 5, and Outlook 2000.
