SUMMARY

Microsoft Excel 2000 and Microsoft Query 2000 (and later) are both 32-bit programs and use 32-bit Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) drivers. With versions of Microsoft Excel earlier than Excel 7.0 and Microsoft Query earlier than Query 2.0 that were designed to operate with the Microsoft Windows 3.1 operating system, the ODBC drivers that you can use depend on the operating system that you are using and whether the program is the 16-bit or 32-bit version.

Microsoft Windows NT

If you are running Microsoft Windows NT, 16-bit programs can use either 16-bit or 32-bit ODBC drivers; 32-bit programs can use only 32-bit ODBC drivers.

Microsoft Windows 95

If you are running Windows 95, 16-bit programs can use only 16-bit ODBC drivers and 32-bit programs can only use 32-bit ODBC drivers.

Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

If you are running Windows 98 or Windows Me, and you must run 16-bit drivers, you need to use the 16-bit drivers that come from individual manufacturers. In the \Windows folder, a list of 32-bit driver files that may be used to replace 16-bit drivers is contained in the Ios.ini file. All the versions of Excel and Query listed below can use the 32-bit ODBC drivers with Windows 98 or Windows Me.

Microsoft Windows 2000

If you are running Windows 2000, and you must run 16-bit drivers, you need to use the 16-bit drivers that come from individual manufacturers. In the \Windows folder, a list of 32-bit driver files that may be used to replace 16-bit drivers is contained in the Ios.ini file. All the versions of Excel and Query listed below can use the 32-bit ODBC drivers with Windows 2000.

The following table lists when to use 16-bit or 32-bit ODBC drivers.
