XL2000: Cannot Define a Name If the Active Sheet Is Protected

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 2000, if the active sheet and its contents are protected, you may not be able to define a name by pointing to Name on the Insert menu and then clicking Define.

To create a macro to define a name when the active sheet and its contents are protected, following these steps:

  1. Start the Visual Basic editor (press ALT+F11).
  2. On the Insert menu, click Module.
  3. In the Module sheet, type the following code:
sub insert_name
   selection.name = inputbox("Please enter a name for the current selection")
end sub
                

Run the macro Insert_Name, and enter the name you want when the Microsoft Excel dialog box appears.
