WD2000: Compile Error Message When Passing Function Call

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to run a macro that was converted from WordBasic to Visual Basic for Applications and that contains code that uses the Open statement in combination with a function call to retrieve the value for the file name argument, the following error message may appear:

Compile error:

Syntax error

After you open and save a template in Microsoft Word 2000 that contains the following macro from an earlier version of Microsoft Word:

Sub MAIN()
   Dim Arg1$
   Arg1$ = "A"
   ' This line contains a Function Call.
   Open Call("Library.OutputFile$", Arg1$) For Append As 2
   Close 2
End Sub
                

Word converts the macro to the following, and the error message appears when you try to run the macro:

Public Sub MAIN()
   Dim Arg1$
   Arg1$ = "A"
   ' This line has been converted to a procedure Call and will cause
   ' the error mentioned earlier in this article.
   Open (WordBasic.Call "Library.OutputFile$",)'", Arg1$) For Append As 2
   Close 2
End Sub
                

CAUSE

When the WordBasic macro is converted, the function call is converted to a procedure call.

To work around this problem, follow these steps:

1. Open the template that contains the macro.
2. On the Tools menu, point to Macro and click Macros.
3. Click the macro and then click Edit.

4. Edit the converted macro and change the procedure call back to a function call.
   
   For example, change this line of code:

   Open (WordBasic.Call "Library.OutputFile$",)'", Argl$) For Append As 2
                       

   to this:

   Open WordBasic.Call("Library.OutputFile$", Arg1$) For Random As 2
                       

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
