PUB2000: Fonts Appear as Empty Boxes

Article ID: 212556

Article Last Modified on 6/29/1999

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Publisher 2000 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q212556

SYMPTOMS

When you type text in a text frame or table in Publisher, some fonts may appear as empty boxes instead of letters. If you selected the Preview fonts in font list option, the same fonts may also appear as empty boxes in the Font list on the Formatting toolbar.

The fonts may also be displayed and printed incorrectly in WordPad.

CAUSE

The Windows 9x TrueType font cache may be corrupted.

RESOLUTION

Start Windows 9x in Safe Mode to refresh the TrueType font cache and then restart the computer as you would normally. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start or restart your computer. After your computer starts, Windows displays the following text:

Starting Windows 9x...

  1. While the text is on your screen, press and release the F8 key. Windows displays a menu.
  2. Type the number for the Safe Mode option, or use the DOWN ARROW key to select it, and then press ENTER.
  3. On the Windows Start menu, click Shut Down.
  4. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart.

If you are still experiencing these symptoms and this problem also appears in WordPad, you may have a Windows 95 problem or a corrupted registry. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
