SYMPTOMS

When you use the spelling checker in a Microsoft Word document, Word does not stop at (or flag as misspelled) words that are spelled correctly but that are included in the exclude dictionary. Instead, it acknowledges them as spelled correctly.

CAUSE

Words contained in an exclude dictionary should be flagged as misspelled in Word 2000 documents when you run the spelling checker. A word in an exclude dictionary cannot be flagged as incorrect for the following reasons:

• The exclude dictionary is in the wrong folder.
  
  Resolution: Move your exclude dictionary to the following folder:
  
  In Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition (Me):

  C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof

  In Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me with profiles enabled, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0:

  C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof

  In Microsoft Windows 2000:

  C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof

  -or-
• The exclude dictionary does not have an .exc extension and the same file name as the main dictionary.
  
  Resolution: Rename your exclude dictionary.
  
  For example, if your main dictionary is Mssp3en.lex, rename the exclude dictionary to Mssp3en.enc.
  
  -or-
• You edited the exclude dictionary in Word, and have not yet restarted Word.
  
  Resolution: On the File menu, click Exit. Then restart Microsoft Word.
  
  -or-
• You added a word that consists of only a single character.

• The exclude dictionary may be damaged.
