Method 1: Different First Page Header and Footer

To create a template with a different first page header and footer, follow these steps:

  1. Create a new Word document by clicking New on the Standard toolbar.
  2. Insert a page break by pressing CTRL+ENTER once. This creates a two-page document.
  3. Position the insertion point on page one by pressing CTRL+HOME.
  4. On the View menu, click Header and Footer.
  5. Click Page Setup on the Header and Footer toolbar.
  6. Click the Layout tab.
  7. Select the Different first page check box. In the Section start list, select New page, and then click OK.
  8. Use the following steps to create your headers and footers:
    1. Create your first page header in the First Page Header area.
    2. Click Switch Between Header and Footer on the Header and Footer toolbar to position the insertion point in the First Page Footer area.
    3. Create your first page footer in the First Page Footer area.
    4. Press PAGE DOWN and position the insertion point in the Header area, and then create the page header for the second and subsequent pages.
    5. Click Switch Between Header and Footer on the Header and Footer toolbar to position the insertion point in the Footer area. Create the page footer for the second and subsequent pages.
  9. To return to your document, click Close on the Header and Footer toolbar.
  10. Delete the page break from the document. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the View menu, click Normal.
    2. Click to select the page break and press DELETE.
    3. On the View menu, click Print Layout.
  11. Save the document in Document Template (*.dot) file format. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the File menu, click Save As.
    2. In the Save as Type box, select Document Template (*.dot).
    3. Type a name for your template file, and click Save.

You now have a one-page template that shows only the first page header and footer. When you create a new document based on this template and your document expands to more than one page, your document will contain a different first page header and footer in addition to a regular header and footer.

Method 2: Different Odd and Even Headers and Footers

To create a template with different odd and even headers and footers, follow these steps:

  1. Create a new Word document by clicking New on the Standard toolbar.
  2. Insert two page breaks by pressing CTRL+ENTER twice. This creates a three-page document.
  3. Position the insertion point on page one by pressing CTRL+HOME.
  4. On the View menu, click Header and Footer.
  5. Click Page Setup on the Header and Footer toolbar.
  6. Click the Layout tab.
  7. Select the Different odd and even check box. In the Section start list, select New page and then click OK.
  8. Use the following steps to create your odd and even page headers and footers:
    1. Create your odd page header in the Odd Page Header area.
    2. Click Switch Between Header and Footer on the Header and Footer toolbar to position the insertion point in the Odd Page Footer area.
    3. Create your odd page footer in the Odd Page Footer area.
    4. Press PAGE DOWN and position the insertion point in the Even Page Header area.
    5. Create your even page header in the Even Page Header area.
    6. Click Switch Between Header and Footer on the Header and Footer toolbar to position the insertion point in the Even Page Footer area.
    7. Create your even page footer in the Even Page Footer area.
    8. To return to your document, click Close on the Header and Footer toolbar.
  9. Delete the page breaks from the document. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the View menu, click Normal.
    2. Click to select a page break and press DELETE. Repeat this step for each page break in the document.
    3. On the View menu, click Print Layout.
  10. Save the document in Document Template (*.dot) file format. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the File menu, click Save As.
    2. In the Save as Type box, select Document Template.
    3. Type a name for your template file and click Save.

You now have a one-page template that shows only the odd page header and footer. When you create a new document based on this template and your document expands to more than one page, your document will contain an odd and even page header and footer.

Method 3: Different First Page and Odd/Even Headers and Footers

  1. Create a new Word document by clicking New on the Standard toolbar.

  8. Use the following steps to create the first page and odd and even page headers and footers:
    1. Create your first page header in the First Page Header area.
    2. Click Switch Between Header and Footer on the Header and Footer toolbar to position the insertion point in the First Page Footer area.
    3. Create your first page footer in the First Page Footer area.
    4. Press PAGE DOWN and position the insertion point in the Even Page Header area.
    5. Create the even page header in the Even Page Header area.
    6. Click Switch Between Header and Footer on the Header and Footer toolbar to position the insertion point in the Even Page Footer area.
    7. Create your even page footer in the Even Page Footer area.
    8. Press PAGE DOWN and position the insertion point in the Odd Page Header area.
    9. Create your odd page header in the Odd Page Header area.
    10. Click Switch Between Header and Footer on the Header and Footer toolbar to position the insertion point in the Odd Page Footer area.
    11. Create your odd page footer in the Odd Page Footer area.
    12. To return to your document, click Close on the Header and Footer toolbar.
  9. Delete the page breaks from the document. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the View menu, click Normal.
    2. Click to select a page break and press DELETE. Repeat this step for each page break in the document.
    3. On the View menu, click Print Layout.
