NOTE: The information in this article applies to Internet Explorer 5 or later only if the Windows Desktop Update or Explorer Shell component is installed. The Windows Desktop Update component is installed with Windows 98 or it can be optionally installed with Internet Explorer 4. The Explorer Shell component is installed with Windows Millennium Edition or Windows 2000.

SYMPTOMS

While you are installing Internet Explorer 5, you may receive the following error message:

Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try running Setup again.

CAUSE

On computers with Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 or Windows 98 installed, this error message can occur if the Cabinet.dll file located in the C:\Windows\System folder is missing or damaged.

RESOLUTION

Windows 98

  1. Insert your Windows 98 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. Type sfc, and then click OK.
  4. Click "Extract one file from installation disk."
  5. Type cabinet.dll, and then click Start.
  6. In the Restore from box, type drive:\win98, where drive is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  7. In the Save file in box, type c:\windows\system, and then click OK.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Click OK when the file has been successfully extracted.

Windows 95

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.
  2. Type cd.., and then press ENTER.
  3. Change directories to the folder containing the Internet Explorer 5 installation files. To do this, type cd, a space, and the name of the appropriate folder, and then press ENTER.
  4. Type extract gsetup95.cab cabinet.dll /l c:\windows\system and then press ENTER.
  5. Type exit and then press ENTER.
